Our Partnership

Bainbridge Public Library owns and maintains the library building and grounds with private funds, while a levy allows Kitsap Regional Library to provide staff, the collection, classes and a virtual library at KRL.org. Together we provide the quality library our community wants and has come to expect.

Learn more about how Kitsap Regional Library and Bainbridge Public Library are working together to bring much-anticipated updates to this Library location below in an interview with Bainbridge Community Broadcasting.

Bainbridge Public Library is funding this project to improve our patrons’ library experience. It will increase the functionality of the space and brighten up the Library's interior and furnishings that have worn out over time. We encourage you to learn more online.

Service Changes

Hours will remain the same throughout the project. Changes in classes and events will be continuously updated on our online calendar.

To provide continuous access the project will be completed in three phases. Service will be augmented with a temporary Express Library in the main meeting room and visits from the bookmobile. The project schedule is fluid, but we’ll share important dates on this page when they become available.

  • PHASE 1 - Meeting Room: The meeting room is currently scheduled to close March 20 and reopen in May.

  • PHASE 2 - Main Floor: The main floor is currently scheduled to close in May and reopen in July. Once the meeting room is completed the main floor will be closed. A temporary Express Library with access to library materials, computers and library staff will be in the new meeting room.

  • PHASE 3 - Bottom Floor: The bottom floor is currently scheduled to close in July and reopen in September. Once the main floor is completed the bottom floor will be closed. There will be youth collection materials available on the main floor.

A small library above the Island’s Port Madison mill store in 1863 was the second community public library in all of Puget Sound. A number of small libraries were supported on the Island during the first half of the 20th Century.

Since 1947, Kitsap Regional Library has provided library service and the strength of a county-wide collection to Island residents.

The first Rotary Auction in 1960, a community-wide rummage sale that is now an Island institution, was held to raise money for a new library at the corner of Madison Ave and High School Road. The library was designed by John Rudolph and built in 1962. A children's library space was created in the lower floor of the library in 1968. Supported by local fundraising, there was a building addition in 1982 and 1997.

Three gardens surround the library. Junkoh Harui and the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community designed and built a magnificent Japanese garden on the west side of the library in 1998. The perennial gardens, beautiful in every season, were designed by nationally recognized garden writer Ann Lovejoy and are maintained by Ann and the "Friday Tidies" every Friday morning. On the NE side of the library, you'll find the cool green fern garden, designed and maintained by John van den Meerendonk.  The grounds were recognized by the American Library Association as the Best Library Garden in 2000.

The library on Bainbridge Island is supported by a unique public-private partnership.  Kitsap Regional Library levies property tax dollars to fund materials, technology, staff and a host of library services. Bainbridge Public Library (Inc.), a sixteen-member nonprofit board, raises private dollars to maintain the library building and grounds.
